SYDNEY (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of residents across Australia's Victoria state remained without power on Wednesday after wild weather knocked down transmission lines, forcing a major power plant to disconnect from the grid, while strong winds fanned bushfires. AGL's Loy Yang A power station, responsible for about a third of the state's power, had to shut down on Tuesday afternoon impacting half a million properties, which officials said was one of the largest outages in Victoria's history. Some properties were completely destroyed by fire with the exact number to be confirmed after fire crews finish their rescue efforts. Firefighters are battling to contain three bushfires, but better weather conditions could help crews to contain the fires quickly, Heffernan said. Australia's weather bureau forecast milder conditions on Wednesday with temperatures in the low to mid-20 degree Celsius (68°F) and moderate winds, but warned the risk was not over yet.

It wasn't just because TikTok users love to gossip — the platform suggested names of popular models as related searches at the bottom of Paré's video. When Business Insider viewed the video, TikTok suggested searching for "devon windsor suitcase" and "Taylor Hill" in different search bars. As TikTok looks to boost search activity , the company is automatically generating suggested queries in the search bars on videos. AdvertisementSince user comments help feed recommended searches, trolls flooding a creator's comments section with rude phrases or false claims can impact what the app recommends their followers view next. AdvertisementLike Bervell, several other TikTokers expressed frustration at their lack of control over the recommended searches, which can end up being "gossipy," he said, or completely unrelated to their content.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Thousand's marked Australia's national day on Friday with "Invasion Day" rallies in support of the country's Indigenous community, many of whom oppose celebrating the day a British fleet sailed into Sydney Harbour in 1788. Australia Day commemorates the day Britain established the state of New South Wales a penal colony, arriving in what is now the state capital Sydney with a "First Fleet" bringing colonists and convicts. Many people celebrate the holiday with barbecues and trips to the beach, and it is also a popular date for immigrants to receive their Australian citizenship. In Sydney, thousands of protesters, many waving Indigenous flags, gathered in the city centre at an "Invasion Day" rally before a march that closed nearby city streets. Two statues of colonial figures were vandalised in Melbourne earlier this week ahead of the contentious national holiday.

But the lost donations might not hurt the schools as much as you might think — at least when taken in isolation. The donors blasting Penn also have given sums that, by any standard, are enormous. Schools could battle a reputational blowUnless the pile-on keeps coming, which it very well might, these schools' bottom lines could be just fine. "As prominent donors withdraw support, other donors may take that as a signal of the loss of institutional focus on education, and these many smaller donors may decide that they too should withdraw support," he added. SYDNEY, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Australia's top court on Wednesday quashed a levy on electric vehicles (EVs) by the state of Victoria, in a case that could make it more difficult for other states to pursue similar legislation. In 2021, Victoria introduced a levy of between A$0.02 ($0.013) and A$0.025 per km travelled in EVs, a tax that faced a wide range of opposition. After a case brought by two EV owners, the High Court ruled Victoria's excise duty can only be levied by the federal government. The states of New South Wales and Western Australia have previously announced plans to introduce similar legislation.
